Proje, Erich Kästner’in aynı adlı romanından uyarlanacak olan Das Doppelte Lottchen idi.

ENGLISH:

Storyboards have always been a chore for me; it is the process of animation itself that I enjoy! This being so, it is ironic that of all the projects I have worked on, the one closest to my heart was something for which I did about ten minutes of storyboard work- and hardly any of it was used.

The project was Das Doppelte Lottchen, based on the novel of the same name by Erich Kästner. (Exact tranlation of the title would be "Double Lotta") The popular story of twins who secretly switch places to bring their divorced parents together has seen many screen adaptations, including two by Disney, both entitled The Parent Trap, 1961 and 1998, and both live action. This time it was to be an all animated feature version undertaken by TVC Hamburg. Because the animation was earmarked for countries providing low cost labor, I couldn’t get any scenes to animate. I was given the last ten seconds or so to board, which I prepared in animatic form, working out of our home in Istanbul and billing it for Esin Desen, Lâle’s company. The sanctity of family life and the endurance of a marriage being matters I take seriously, I really put my heart into the work.

The poster of the film.
The film was released in 2007 and I purchased the DVD in 2008, when I was working in Halle (Germany). To my great disappointment, almost none of my efforts had made it into the film. The reason was a script change, which certainly cut the budget. I had remained quite faithful to the given script while taking care to make the father come across as a gentleman and a man ready to face the consequences of his decisions. The finished film remains charming in spite of the change but I have to say the father weasels his way out of his relationship with the “other woman” in a far less honorable fashion.

Spending these days with my aged mother in a hospital, and my father gone these past three and a half years, I find myself particularly disposed to share this effort that speaks for solidarity and love within the family.
