JAMES MACAULAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

 Jim'in 11 Kasım 2011 tarihli mektubunun sonu:

My teacher would send me photocopies of pages from his sketchbooks; this one came with  his letter of Nov. 29th, 2011.

ENGLISH

"... So I draw- and draw. I can't stop! What a pleasure it is! And how useful! I get a great 'kick' out of visualising things I want to make and then finding that they come out just as I visualised them..."

These are the words of my teacher and friend, who liked to be called Jim- something I found hard to do because of the respect I held for him. They are from one of the letters he sent to me, dated Nov. 11th 2011.

I learned from a Facebook post dated April 4th 2015 that he had passed away.

James Macaulay was a teacher at the animation department of Sheridan College, which I attended during the summers of 1980, 81 and 82. The summer program was offered to international students and Mr Macaulay- alright, Jim- was always present among the students even though, as far as I can remember, he wasn't officially assigned to teach during the summer program. (Correct me if I'm wrong on this!) He genuinely wanted to teach all he knew, and if you genuinely wanted to learn, you had a perfect teacher-student rapport. One student wanted to make an anti-whaling film and Jim, perfectly in his element, explained what a whaling ship looks like. The next thing we know he came in with a stylized, palm-sized whaler carved out of wood, complete with harpoon, which he had conjured in his workshop for the purpose, and gave it to the student.

We had corresponding interests- drawing, animation, trains, planes, ships, models, well-crafted things. When I managed to track down his address we became fine pen-friends. It was always a thrill to recognize his elegant, flourishing handwriting on the envelope. He would include photocopies of pages from his sketchbooks and photos of his handiwork. When I had students of my own, I passed on whatevever knowledge I could to my students and even shared his letters.

Then I learned of his illness, which never seemed to dampen his spirit. But his letters became less frequent. Looking through my files, I find his last letter to me was dated April 24th 2013, almost two years ago. In it he announced he would be moving soon, having to give up his workshop, and promised to write a long letter "just as soon as I am able". My last letter to Jim is dated June 2nd 2014, and I sent him a seasonal greeting illustration in December. Though I now feel I should have written again, I at least have the consolation of being the last to write!

I have lost, a source of inspiration, a role model, a kindred spirit, a good friend, a father figure less than a year after losing my own father. Aside from the sadness that always comes with such loss, I feel a strange kind of loneliness. Being Jim's student, I will now return to my pencil and papers for consolation, something Jim would have approved.

Conclusion of Jim's letter of Nov. 11th, 2011.
And thank you for being you, Mr. Macaulay, Jim.
Your old friend, Tash
