VE YENİ YIL- AND THE NEW YEAR

TÜRKÇE  (For English please scroll down.)

Another year over, but what a year it was this time. The past decade in Turkey was like being trapped in a interminable B movie that's a strange mixture of horror, adventure, whodunnit and espionage genres. 2013 saw a flash of hope with the June uprising, also known popularly as the Gezi resistance, after the name of the park that was at once the reason and the focus of the sensational public show of defiance against a repressive and regressive regime. It was not possible to choose another theme for this year's new year message! Illustration: Tahsin ("Tash") Özgür, color design by Lâle Özgür. ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

Remember those anxious years when CG animation was becoming increasingly popular, theratening to push hand-drawn animation completely off the screens? That's when we dreamed up the idea of a "Cartoon Animation Day" or "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", to remind people of the very particular beauty of drawings that move. The celebrations would be held on November 18th, commemorating the 1928 release of Steamboat Willie, considered the first Mickey Mouse film and the first cartoon conceived and made as a sound film. We hoped to spread the idea, our friend Rıdvan Çevik, teaching animation at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, tried to turn it into a day of activities at his school, and when I and my wife started teaching at Maltepe University, Istanbul, we tried to do the same. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", Sept. 10th, 2010.) But after trying for a few years in a row, we saw that the idea wasn't catching on. Now, with even our national celebrations under threat, our caprice of a day for hand-drawn animation seems childish and unimportant. (Compatriots will know what I am talking about!) Today I got a phone call from Çevik in Eskişehir; he was wishing us a "happy Hand-Drawn Animation Day". The best word for my feelings would be: bittersweet. We marched for October 29th, Republic Day, we marched for November 10th, anniversary of Ataturk's decease, because we were against the government's push to make us forget them. I felt I had to do something for our own November 18th, once so important to me because I wanted to keep people from forgetting the art and craft I loved. As it happens, I had left a cassette containing some animation work at a photo shop to be transferred on disc and was due to pick them up today. I decided to share some old animation in honor of the occasion. I picked this one; I had animated it at Hahn Film in Berlin back in 1995 or '96. The concept and character belong to Swiss artist Ted Sieger. I feel it's a good example of the kind of freedom and liveliness that makes hand-drawn animation special. Pure flip-power!

BALONLU ÇİKLET İÇİN DENEMELER- EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION FOR BUBBLE GUM ADS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Seneler seneler önce, artık çok geride kalmış Manajans günlerimde canlandırmış olduğum iki reklâm filmini geçen gün burada sizlerle paylaşmıştım. (Bkz.

I recently shared with you here two ads for a bubble gum brand that I had animated years and years ago, during those long-gone days at Istanbul's Manajans ad agency. (See "Bubble Gum Days", 9 August-Ağustos 2013.)I had also made some experimental animation for the project at the time and am sharing three of them here. These were done for development and presentation purposes only and as such were never used anywhere. You will notice that the character's proportions are different in the first one; I animated it well before starting work on the first film and the character was still being developed. The purpose was to give the agency an idea about the flavor of the animation I was going to produce. In the second I explored the possibility of going into a sci-fi/adventure direction. The third is a whimsical way of presenting the voracious appetites of the bubble-gum crazy aliens.

BALONLU ÇİKLET GÜNLERİ- BUBBLE GUM DAYS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Özellikle mürrekkebe çekmede ilk filmde Ümit Taşçı, ikincisinde Mustafa Yılmazyıldırım'a ayrıca tekrar teşekkür ederim. (Öykülerin mürekkeplenmesinde her ikisi de çalışmıştı tabii.)

ENGLISH

Do you remember bubble gum stories? Very short stories and situations with a single gag that would come out of the wrapping. I was also involved in a project of this kind once.

In 1983 I started working for Manajans, a major advertising agency in Istanbul. I was taken on as animator, even though that position had not existed in the agency before that date. I was given the assignment of revamping an existing bubble gum brand, developing a new concept, coming up with new characters, and dreaming up and drawing new situations and gags. I proposed a group of children, all friends and classmates in elementary school. One of them happens to own a spaceship! How would a little kid get his hands on a neat toy like that? Simple really! Two wandering extraterrestrials happen by, our young friend offers them some bubble gum, and the aliens are so taken with the taste and so thrilled by the pleasure of blowing bubbles with what they are chewing that they return the favor by generously giving the lad their spaceship.

For years I practically lived with these kids! I ate, drank, slept, and breathed with them. My whole family is moving these days. Trunks and dusty old boxes are being opened, and old memories spill out. I ran into an envelope full of those little bubble gum stories from way back then. It was like meeting old friends again!

I had also animated two commercials for the gum; the first followed the agency's wishes and ended up lacking in pep and rythm. By the time the second one came around, I was more assured of my position and managed to press for something with tempo and energy. I should immediately acknowledge the assistance of the members of the Manajans art department for their invaluable help in inking and coloring the film as well as the little comics. (Back then, drawings for animated films had to be transferred to celluloid cels and painted!) I should mention by name Ümit Taşçı, who inked the drawings of the first film, and Mustafa Yılmaz yıldırım, who did the same for the second. (Both have contributed to the little stories.) For shooting and editing, I relied on the support of the technicions of Manavizyon, the agency's film production branch.

I am sharing some of the comics, a printed ad, and the two animated commercials here.

KORKAK TAVŞANLAR BİLE- EVEN FRIGHTENED BUNNIES

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

I made this illustration to announce that I too would be attending the demonstration before the Silivri prison compound outside Istanbul on April 8th, 2013. Be he a man, a mouse, or a bunny, an animator can never be a coward, because our animated films are about the victory of good over evil against all odds. Could we have drawn it all frame by frame if we hadn't believed? And without belief and conviction, could those films have been so beautiful? To see how I used this illustration, click here.

HARP VE SULH HAKKINDA- ABOUT WAR AND PEACE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

My years at the Manajans ad agency in Istanbul again, between 1983-87. This time I had a pretty strong concept: though people may well talk about "peace" and "brotherhood", their own covetous and aggressive instincts will be the first obstacle to the ideal! Unfortunately, I made very little headway on that project- this is the longest complete scene.

In those years I had no access to a quick, practical linetest system. I relied heavily on "flipping" for fluidity and timing. When my scene was complete I would ask a camera technician from the agency to mount a camera on the company's animation stand for me, and shoot a test on film stock. Mostly, I had to do with just one test. If I felt corrections were needed, I would make as many as three, but not more! Had the easy-to-use pencil test programs of today been available in those years, I would have had a better variation of timing in this scene; now it's a bit languid and monotonous. At least it does enforce the relaxed mood of the character.

ÇÖPKEDİSİ- TRASHCAT

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

I am investing some time in rescuing my old animation work from videocassettes and my old Amiga "Take 2", and the ones that I feel worth sharing I put here on my blog.

Here is one from my years at Manajans, an ad ageny in Istanbul. I worked there from 1987 to 1989, and because I had a very understanding boss- his name was Eli Aciman- I was allowed to work on my own animation ideas between assignments, making free use of company time. (See also "The Birth of Kaktüs" and also "A Dragon Tale", February 21st 2012). I would come up with a story idea and start animating a scene from that story straight away, which is not the right way to do it but the urge to see things moving was so strong, it made me impatient! Inevitably, after a scene or two, my mind would drift to another idea and I would start animating on that!

At the end of my stint at Manajans I had no complete independent film to show for the four years there, but a demo cassette with assorted scenes that earned me my job as animator at Don Bluth's studio in Dublin. (Sullivan Bluth Studios.)

NURİ KURTCEBE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Turkey is a mess these days, and this blog is not the place to discuss it. But a friend and colleague who has received 11 months and 40 days for a political cartoon is! The court has softened the blow by postponing the sentence for five years; if he "behaves", he will escape the sentence. The aim is to break the artist's pencil!

Nuri Kurtcebe is a cartoonist of long standing in Turkey, a patriot, an artist with great integrity, and a truly honest human being. I know because I met him, and worked with him. When I started teaching animation at Maltepe University, Istanbul, he was already there teaching cartooning. We developed a good rapport and I gained a lot from my acquaintance with this artist who puts his conscience and convictions before everything else. It's a poor show of solidarity that I took so long to put my thoughts and feelings in writing on the subject; after all, we had heard about it on the news way back on February 1st. The truth is, there are so many things that are terribly wrong happening here now that I just can't catch up! Kurtcebe is an artist with a pencil, like I am, an artist much braver than I am, and the least I can do is to express my concern and respect. This is not a political blog, so I won't talk about his controversial cartoon here. For that, please check out: http://tashlik.blogspot.com, "A Pencil Jab that Hurt", March 16th 2013. TARZAN'I TANIMAK- GETTING TO KNOW TARZAN

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

TARZAN'LA TANIŞMAK-  GETTING TO KNOW TARZAN from tahsinozgur on Vimeo.

ENGLISH

It was either towards the end of 1996 or early in 1997, during the pre-production of Tarzan the animators had to go through a training program to prepare themselves for the assignments to come. This included anatomy lessons, acting lessons, group trips to the theatre, and of course experimental animation to get to know the characters on which we would be working.

The experimental animation was not done through specific assignments; we would think up situations, plan the staging, animate them, and then show them to the supervising animator of the character, in the case of Tarzan himself that would be Glen Keane himself.

I am sharing with you one of my experimental Tarzan scenes from that time, with an animated moving camera, prisms of light refracted through the lens, and a camera wobble when Tarzan and the imaginary cameraman all land on the jungle floor. It shows how enthusiastic I was and how much I enjoyed doing animating it all. It goes without saying that I was also eager to impress!

EN GÜZEL FİLM- THE BEST FILM OF ALL

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Illustration I made for the DVD menu of The Best Film in the World, which I never got round to use. I consulted Lâle for the colors.

ENGLISH

We were married in 1990, and in 1991 I srarted setting up my first pencil test system and bought my first camcorder for that purpose. Then I discovered what a great thing it was to record our travels, experiences, the highlights of our life together with movement and sound. Lâle and I frequently sit back with cups of coffee and relax watching this or the other chapter of our mutual life; we've already given the collection the title: "The Best Film of All"!

It's so much more than a photograph- the recorded image with motion, sound, and cutting allows you almost to relive the day; you even recall details you haven't recorded! Another plus is that it's a practical and almost unconscious education in filmmaking; you learn about how long to stay on a shot, how to compose a scene, the different angles you can choose, how the shots look in continuity, and on and on. You just try it all and see how it looks! These questions are always on my mind because, since I know I'll never have the time to edit anything afterwards, I try to do my editing right there and then while I'm shooting! It also keeps me on my toes because I keep climbing up walls and throwing myself on the ground to get the best shot I can.

ERGENEKON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

When I was working for Disney Paris- the year was 1996, the project Hercules, we used to see the "dailies" of all Disney animated features in production on a regular basis, to keep the creative juices flowing. That's when I saw scenes from Mulan for the first time; it was in production at Disney Florida then.

I was very impressed, it's still one of my favorite Disney films. The charismatic villains were the Huns, and since we Turks consider them our forefathers, I got into a lot of Hun talk with my colleagues in the studio.

The French can't produce the "h" sound, and they tend to swallow the last letter of a word, so they kept calling the Huns "les 'eu". It took me a while to catch on to what they were talking about!

All those Mulan scenes and Hun talk inspired me to animate this scene of a "Hun"; a completely private bit of animation. I have labeled it "Ergenekon", rather provocatively because it's a hot word today. "Ergenekon" is really an ancient Turkish saga, but the word has gained notoriety in Turkey recently because it has been used repeatedly within the context of a shadowy political purge process. I wont go into it because this is not a political blog; that sort of stuff I write elsewhere. It's just that the word has been done to death in the last few years, and it prompted me to fish out this old piece of animation and share it with you. An ancestor who is a Hun will also pass for an ancestor from the mythical valley of Ergenekon!
