BİR EJDER YAVRUSU İÇİN BABALIK HAKKI- PATERNAL RIGHTS TO A BABY DRAGON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

It was years ago, I was working at an advertising agency in Istanbul. Fresh out of the animation department of Sheridan College, I had been hired as an animator but was stuck mostly with illustration assignments. I continued animating my own ideas. Not that any of it would lead to anything, but it did keep me from rusting and even allowed self improvement. My boss, Mr. Eli Acıman, not only tolerated but even encouraged my working on independent animation during work hours between agency assignments. "Kaktüs" the little dragon was born during that period, I am sharing the "birth scene".

I was just starting out at the time; the ears have far too much overlap. Inexperience and overenthusiasm were my faults. That, and the difficulty of shooting a linetest!

The scene was in the demo cassette I sent to Don Bluth in June 1987, which means it was made earlier than that. That cassette got me into Sullivan Bluth Studios in Ireland and thus opened the way to a full and satisfying professional life, moving from studio to studio, country to country. I went to Ireland to start working for Don Bluth in September 1987 Though there were other scenes in the cassette, I always wanted to believe "Kaktüs" the dragon made the difference.

There was to be a story that went with the dragon but no film or comic book came out of it. Still, I used "Kaktüs" as a kind of mascot for years, drawing the figure in letters and on new year's messages.

During a trip abroad this past December (in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dec. 6th 2011) we saw some dragon sculptures for sale, mostly horrific but one of them cute. That single cute one looked strangely like my "Kaktüs". I had used the character as a mascot for years and apparently someone had turned it into money! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! But I decided to blog all of this to stake a claim for paternal rights! I believe the video and images are as convincing as a genetic test.

"ÜZÜM ŞEHRİ KIRKLARELİ" İÇİN BİR MASKOT- A MASCOT FOR KIRKLARELİ, "CITY OF GRAPES""

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

Özüm Kırklar is a peasant girl whose family owns a vinyard. She loves grapes, whether to eat or to drink in the form of "hardaliye", the traditional local drink of Kırklareli. Her name "Özüm", sounding so close to "üzüm" ("grape") echoes the theme. Some people interested in the development and publicizing of Kırklareli's image and resources asked us for ideas and we designed and offered them this figure as a mascot. She first went public with this sketch, which was published in a local newspaper. At first we thought she hit it off well with the public, but her popularity turned out to be very ephemeral! "ÖZÜM KIRKLAR"

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Birden bire istemeyiverdiler. Özüm de böylelikle yaratıcılarıyla beraber evine döndü. Şimdi burada sizlerle paylaşıyorum, bir daha yayınlanmayacak. (Çizim: Tahsin Özgür, renkler: Lâle Özgür)

ENGLISH

At first little Özüm Kırklar was greeted with enthusiasm. After the first sketch was published in a local newspaper, there were plans to expand on the concept, adding family members who would each represent a different aspect of Kırklareli life. Wishful thinking was growing so fast it put me in a state of mild panic- after all, I had offered to draw her for free. Then suddenly, at a City Council meeting, they decided they did not want her after all! So she ended up coming back home with her creators. I am sharing her here with you, and this will be her last public appearance. (Drawing by Tahsin Özgür, colors by Lâle Özgür)

ÖZÜM VE "HARDALİYE"- ÖZÜM AND "HARDALİYE"

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Küçük Özüm burada bir bardak nefis "hardaliye" (Kırklareli ağzıyla "ardaliye") içmekte; yarısını götürmüş bile, yalanarak gerisini de bitirmeye hazırlanıyor. Kırklareli sonunda bu hediyemizi kabul etmedi! (Çizim: Tahsin Özgür, Renkler: Lâle Özgür.)

ENGLISH

Little Özüm licking her lips after downing half a glass of delicious "hardaliye" (or as the h-dropping locals in Kırklareli say it, "'ardaliye"), and is all set to drink up the rest. Unfortunately, the town of Kırklareli turned down this gift! (Drawing by Tahsin Özgür, colors by Lâle Özgür)

BİRAZ DA YENİ BİRŞEYLER- AND NOW FOR SOMETHING NEW

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

I realize I have been sharing a lot of old animation, but please don't take this to mean I am no longer animating. My friend Rıdvan Çevik, an animation instructor at the Anadolu University in Eskişehir, has for some time been working on a hand-animated film with his students. It is a humorous publicity film for the university. I wanted to take part in the production and have animated a number of scenes since this past summer. With Çevik's approval I am sharing two of the most recent ones. It is a fine project, going well, and I want very much to see it successfuly completed. Of the two scenes I am sharing, the second one includes my traditional new year's eve animation work.
