YENİYIL- 2024- NEWYEAR

TÜRKÇE: (For English please scroll down.)

Son haftalarda medya İsrail'in Gazze'yi bombalaması görüntüleriyle dolu.

Bugün ölen Filistinlilerin sayısı 18000'i geçmişken ABD, Birleşik Krallık, Almanya, Avusturya gibi uygar ve demokratik ülkelerin "İsrail'in yanındayız" diye ortaya atılmaya devam etmeleri acı.

Hz. İsa da Filistinliydi! (Bethlehem ya da Beytülhallim- Batı Şeria.)

"Barış'ın Prensi" ne derdi bunlara?

Bu seneki yeniyıl resmimiz bu; başka konu seçemezdim!

ENGLISH:

For weeks on end the media is awash with images of Israel bombs raining on Gaza.

Diligently cultivating the image of the eternal and unchanging victim and exploiting the suffering of those "6 million Jews" while inflicting a similar kind of treatment upon a population within its own borders, all the while claiming to be the real victims themselves, makes the situation almost comical.

Not so comical is the number of Arabs who are losing their lives in the meantime.

To remind people that Princess Jasmin is also an Arab...

It is tragic that Hamas "terrorists" broke out of Gaza and killed 1200 people.

But seeing as Israel is one of the greatest military powers in the Middle East, a nuclear power even, enjoying the full diplomatic and military support of the US, it is again comical that they can liken Hamas which has light arms, pick-up trucks, and at most, rockets, to the Nazis.

Now that Palestinian deaths have gone over the 18000 mark, it is bitter to hear "civilized and democratic" nations like the US, the UK and Germany go on reiterating that they "stand with Israel". It is tragicomic at best!

Even more tragicomic is the fact that we are approaching Christmas in this gloomy atmosphere.

Jesus was also from Palestine (Bayt Lahm, or Bethlehem, in the West Bank).

What would "the Prince of Peace" have to say about all this?

I couldn't have picked another topic this year!

100 YIL TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ- 100 YEARS TURKISH REPUBLIC

TÜRKÇE: (For English please scroll down.)

100. Yıl Resmim- internet versyonu. 100th year drawing internet version.

Annemle söyleşi- Interview with my mother

10 Kasım için. For November 10th.

ENGLISH:

On October 29th we celebrated the 100th year of the Turkish Republic. On important days like this I always prepare something to share on Facebook and other social media. This time it was more special; I had to prepare a drawing that would be worthy of the occasion; it should at least not fall short of what I had done before!

My first scribble was rather simplistic: Ataturk with a group of happy citizens filling the background! My wife Lâle gave me a better idea over our morning coffee; I can say she pretty much described the composition. Ataturk's own words

"My frail body is certain to turn to earth one day, but the Turkish Republic will last forevermore"

were to guide the design. The crowd and the involved composition ended up being difficult to execute.

Horizontal "8" for "forevermore".
To represent the concept of "lasting forevermore" I naturally had to integrate the horizontal "8" that represents infinity into the middle of the composition. I discovered afterwards that the symbol had already become a recurrent motif of the celebrations.

I made two versions by placing the quotation from Ataturk at two different positions, ending up with an A4 to stick on our apartment doors, and a more squarish one to share on the Net.

My mother is 100 years old now, going on 101.

Because her lifetime correponds to the Republic, I thought it would be appropiate to record her recollections and share them online. I ended up with a longish and very interesting recording. Then, while attempting to transfer it from the SD card to my computer I deleted it all by mistake! I wasted more time downloading programs that were supposed to rescue deleted files. I did rescue some deleted files but not the recording of my mother- I must have overwritten it while trying to download the program that was supposed to rescue it! I had no choice but to make another recording. This one was much shorter because October 29th was the next day and I had very little time left for editing + subtitling. I tried to enrich it with family photos and period images from the Internet. I was able to share it exactly on the day!

Twelve days later it was October 10th, the anniversary of Ataturk's passing. I had used the image of Ataturk's mausoleum in the 100th anniversary drawing, so it seemed very natural to use it for the anniversary of his parting as well. For a backdrop I used a photo we had taken on another November 10th, the one in 2013. In the foreground I had my bunny character make a comparison I believe to be very meaningful on this our 100th year: the secular Republic founded on the principle of equal citizenship bequeathed to us by Atatürk in contrast the sorry situation of nearby Israel that has chosen the opposite path, that of theocracy and apartheid!

ÜÇ TEMEL CANLANDIRMA EGZERSİZİ- THREE BASIC ANIMATION EXERCISES

TÜRKÇE: (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH:

Tuna is the son of our dear friends Murat and Ceylan (and the brother of pretty little Defne with the penetrating eyes). Tuna was at point moved to take animation lessons for me- strange, because his own father is a fine animator. He came over on those Saturdays I spend with my mother in Istanbul, arriving in the morning and leaving after a shared lunch. I was all chuffed up for having a student again and my mother for having "a grandson"!

My mother found a "grandson" in Tuna; becoming all chatty at the table!

The truth is, I'm not all that good as a teacher; I have trouble organizing my thoughts and finding the right words. Names and dates always come after a certain time-lapse! So my favored method has been to teach by demonstration, which means animating a version of the exercise myself.

That's what I did with the half-filled flour sack, and the flag wave.

Tuna at the Koç museum,  Jan. 14th, 2012.
When it was time for the lip-sych exercise, I decided to use
Tuna's own voice, from when he was little. I took the voice from a video recording made during a visit to the Koç Museum together years ago (2012)! Reacting to the trains on display, he's heard to say "Wooow! Look at the twain!" I made a simple character model which, I have to admit, looks older than the voice!

Then I animated a version, giving vent to my enthusiasm for model railways!

Tuna will be going to England soon to study animation. I hope we'll see the student surpass his master. If one day he completes his exercises satisfactorily, I'll share them as well. Or better still, he'll share them himself!

2ZLER x 6

TÜRKÇE: (For English please scroll down.)

2zlerin doğum günü için onlara Tenten'in iki ciltlik aya yolculuk serüvenini aldım.

(O yıllarda Tenten'in Türkçesi sadece siyah beyaz, orijinallerden trase edilmiş küçük format korsan yayınlarla sınırlıydı.) Kitabı yalayıp yuttum. Öykünün tamamlanmadığını görünce ikinci kitap Explorers on the Moon da alındı ve onu da aynı hız ve merakla okudum! (Çok seneler sonra Fransızca öğrenirken Objectif Lune ve On A Marché sur la Lune başlıklarıyla orijinal dilinde yeniden aldım.Tintin dergisinde tefrika olarak yayınlanması 1950'ye, yani Apollo 11'in ilk başarılı ay yolculuğundan 19, Yuri Gagarin'in uzaya ilk çıkan insan olmasından 11, benim doğumumdan 6 yıl önce!

Tenten'in uçakta okuduğu tanıtım kitapçığı; üç sayfanın ilki.

İsim bir Donald Duck resimli roman öyküsünden geldi (Have Gun Will Dance, yani "Silahı Olan Danseder").

Babamın A.B.D. günlerindenden kalma üstünde "Col.

Tenten'in izlenimleri bana uzay hakkında çok şey öğretecekti

Kolay kaçış!
Tenten'in ay serüveninin bende kalıcı etkisi Sanat'la hayâl gücünü harmanlayarak hayâli gerçeklikler yaratabileceğimi öğrenmemdi.

Tenten'in ay macerasını Hedef Ay ve Aya Ayak Basıldı başlıklarıyla yayınlanmış görünce ikizlere almak istedim.

Lâle sağında Sina ve solunda Emre'ye Tenten'in ay macerasını okuyor.

2zlere 6ncı doğum günü resmim- My drawing for the Twins' 6th  Bırthday.

ENGLISH

I was late in sharing my birthday picture for the twins this year, the reason being that it involves some of my fetish themes and, honestly, I wanted to take some time writing about them.

For their birthday this year I bought the twins Tintin's two volume moon adventure!

I was still an elementary school student when my parents
bought Destination Moon in English from the Tarhan Bookshop in Ankara. (The Turkish version of Tintin at the time consisted of black-and-white, retraced pirate prints in small format.) I simply gobbled it up and, with the story unfinished, we soon purchased Explorers on the Moon and I went through that just as fast!  (Years later, when learning French, I bought the original versions of both books, namely, Objectif Lune and On A Marché sur la Lune.) The story was first published in installments in Tintin magazine in 1950, 19 years before the first actual moon landing, 11 before Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, and 6 before I was born. The two albums that we know were published in 1953. By the time I read them, even the book version was about a decade old but looked perfectly contemporary to me, and the meticulous detail Hergé put into them made the story very convincing.

The story was still fresh in my mind when my mother took me on two successive trips to Switzerland for eye treatment (1964 and 65). Border crossings, passports, checkpoints reminded me of the story (we went first by bus, the next year by train, crossing many borders), and the German language I could not understand at the time was like the hard-sounding Syldavian in the books.

Checkpoints and passports! How cool is that?

Even the gadgets in the hospital recalled the technical equipment at the Sprodj Atomic Research Center. The Center was nestled in high rocky mountains like the Alps.

The mountains surrounding Sbrodj.

Arid landscapes and old trucks.
Admittedly the bareness of the landscape bore no
resemblance to lush Switzerland but they echoed the arid surroundings of Ankara where we were living at the time, and the trucks and other vehicles used at the Center were not unlike ones I saw passing by on the streets.

Hergé's story is set in an imaginary country called Syldavia. Seeing Tintin and Captain Haddock landing in Klow airport on a Syldavian passenger flight had a strong effect on me: Hergé's meticulously detailed style had made these non-existent places convincing.

Tintin and Captain Haddock land in Klow airport.

Syldavia had first appeared in King Ottokar's Sceptre (Le Sceptre d'Ottokar), serialized in Le Petit Vingtième in 1938-39, published in book form in 1939, then published again with improved illustrations in 1947, color only being added at this point and this being the version we know today. The tourist information booklet Tintin reads during the flight shows how well the country was thought out.

The information booklet Tintin reads during the flight. Fırst of three pages.

Origin of the name Prutopia.
Hergé's Syldavia showed me a whole new way I could apply my inclination to draw: inventing an imaginary country complete with its own history, geography, flag and language, to use as a setting for all my drawings. I cribbed the name of the country from a Donald Duck adventure, Have Gun Will Dance, a Cold War story wherein a pair of spies from a fictitious communist country named Brutopia chase after a top-secret ray gun. I changed Brutopia to Prutopia and the regime to democracy- like Switzerland, not a kingdom like Syldavia!

On Prutopian maps north is below.
I first thought of Prutopia as an island, then decided to locate it somewhere in mainland Europe. But all places being taken, I just appended a big penninsula to Portugal, depriving that country of a big chunk of its coastline. Naturally I ran into the Christian-Muslim dichotomy and bowing to influences around me I made the Prutopians muslim. I don't remember how I explained that away at the time but had I known about it I could have easily made it plausible by linking the Prutopians to the Ummayad Caliphate of Andalusia!

From that point onwards everything I encountered in real life had a counterpart in Prutopia. This being my fantasy I was completrly free in the matter of costumes, architecture, events and. environment. There was even an atomic research center like Sbrodj in Syldavia: P.A.R.C.- the "Prutopian Atomic Research Center". (Because it is international, the name is in English and not Prutopian!)

I knew of no atomic research center in Switzerland but unknown to me, the European Council for Nuclear Research (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucleaire ya da CERN), known for experiments few of us understand, had already been founded in 1954, three years after the story appeared in serial form and one year after the books.

Sprodj personnel called to a meeting.
The personnel at Sprodj wore identical (albeit multicolored)
overalls with number patches applied to their left breast pockets; that, and the fact that my father was a military man, inspired me to give P.A.R.C. a hierarchical, military style organization. I found an old ID pin of my father's U.S. days with the inscription "COL. OZGUR" and I took a spare triple laurel leaf pin that went with his uniform collar and sticking them on a dark blue shirt (the color of my father's uniform) I became a scientist of the P.A.R.C. with the rank of colonel! Dressed up in this consciously restrained uniform, I conducted many researches, designed many spaceships!

(I might add here that the colonel is the highest rank in the P.A.R.C. Obviously, I thought the rank of general for a scientist would be a bit much. Only much later did I learn that the same went for the Swiss army, a restraint that pleased me.)

Part of the Atomic Research Center is carved into the mountain;

here is a ventilation window.

Hergé must have seen the the center at Jungfraujoch, partly carved inside the mountain.

Inside of Tintin's rocket and the commands of an oldtimer Swiss train, still in use.

In their next adventure, The Calculus Affair Tintin and Captain Haddock are on their way to Syldavia again, but spend 18 pages in Switzerland en route, bonding Switzerland even more firmly with Tintin's world in my mind.(Original title L'affaire Tournesol, serialized in Tintin magazine 1954-1956, published in book form in 1956.) The locations are authentic, placing the fantasy characters into a very real environment before moving on to the invented Balkan states of Borduria and Syldavia, lending conviction to those places as well.

Hergé hasn't forgotten the typical Swiss rain, even the flag and cantonal emblem on the taxi's license plate are there.

In Geneva train station wth the green cars I also new, and even purchased as models.

A swan rescues Snowy at Lake Geneva, myself feeding swans at Lake Constance.

Tintin and Snowy at Hotel Cornavin.
Our heroes even go into an existing hotel in Geneva, Hotel Cornavin, and up to this day the hotel still reminds us of the visit of the imaginary celebrity with an effigy at the entrance.

(For earlier entries regarding Switzerland see: "Sweet Poison", 4 Ekim- October 2014 and "Land of Clouds", 29 Haziran- June 2016 )

I went in and out of different fantasy worlds as the years went by, pushing Prutopia furher and further back. It did not completely vanish, however, but evolved.

For years I have another imaginary country, subject of many sketches and drawings. Geographically it has moved closer to Switzerland, a country I still love, to nestle in an undefined location among the mountains and valleys of the Alps.

For some reason I am reluctant to pronounce its name, like it's a personal secret, but make frequent use of its flags and insignia. Sometimes it is an escape, at others a symbol  of my personal ethical independence ("Özgürlük"= freedom, independence, derived from "Özgür"= free, independent, my surname).

The swan I photographed in a park in St.Gallen, Switzerland,
where I was receiving eye treatment, (a photo I can't find today because I must have put it aside), the swans I fed breadcumbs at Lake Konstanz became the motif on the flag. When we founded our company in 1999 the swan appeared on the Esin Desen logo. (See: "'Esin Desen' Logo", 18 Mart- March 2020.)

Of course Tintin's moon adventure was an eye opener for me for far more obvious reasons: it taught the impressionable child, still under ten, about the endless void that is space, the barren and inhospitable landscape of the moon, and how ambitious an undertaking such an expedition would be, even though the Tintin version proved to be much more simplistic than reality. But I was learning that, bit by bit, from the Apollo missions which were very topical at the time.

I learned a lot about space trom Tintin's observations.

Easy getaway!
The lasting impression for me was the possibility of combining imagination and Art to create new realities! Not, I hasten to add, high-tech Matrix-like prisons like Virtual Reality and Metaverse, but something that is one's own inner world, reinpreted from actual observation! It is a richness that we can find within ourselves, by blending what is outside with what is within. A kind of escapism it mey be, but of a healthy and creative sort!

When I saw Tintin's moon adventure published in Turkish (Hedef Ay and Aya Ayak Basıldı) I had a strong impulse to buy them for the twins. It is certain their experience of the story will not be the same as mine but perhaps they too will find something for themselves in the meticulously thought out fantasy world created by Hergé,  and learn to expand the horizons of their own imaginations, always in tandem with reality.
